Current PhD Research: Designing, executing, and evaluating digital innovations and AI solutions for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance across Uganda's health system — building the national NIAMR interoperable platform funded by the UK NIHR.
NIAMR is a three-year, NIHR-funded national research programme (Award NIHR168786, February 2026 – January 2029) hosted at the Health Informatics Research and Innovation Institute (HIRI) at Makerere University. The project is building a national interoperable digital platform that integrates AMR surveillance data from across Uganda's existing siloed systems into a single, actionable One Health picture — strengthening how the country detects, tracks, and responds to antimicrobial resistance.
AMR-associated mortality surpassed deaths due to malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis in Uganda in 2019. The NIAMR platform spans all five One Health sectors: human, animal, water, wildlife, and environment — and is designed to connect with GLASS (WHO Global AMR Surveillance System) and Uganda's national digital health infrastructure.
